So many sound cards, so little time.
I need help deciding which one would be best for me. What I'm looking at is the Audiophile 2496 and a few Terratec products. The Audiophile seems to be a pretty popular card and has good features, but Terratec has stepped up and announced OS X support for their '4Gsound' cards. Haven't seen the drivers yet, but I suspect they are probably waiting for Jaguar to be released. The Audiophile also needs a driver update to work in 10.2.
This card is going to be hooked up to a receiver and speakers for the sound system. What I want is 5.1 support, 5-channel, audio i/o, stereo i/o, MIDI i/o, 24/96, and headphone jack.

The Terratec DMX 6fire looks good, with it's 5.25' breakout box that can be front mounted in a dive bay, but I believe also can be used externally. This would be a winner if my G4 had 2 full size bays, but I'm wondering if it's worth it since I don't have them.

3d Drivers For Games
- I have an Audiophile 2496 on one of my PCs, and it's a great card for the money (especially since I got one new for $129 somehow), but it isn't a 5.1 home theater card. At most it's going to give you 4 channels of output, two analog and two digital.... not what you're looking for.

I'd go with the Audiophile. Lots of users and good quality. Mac drivers for some time.
Terratec just started writing Mac drivers for the first time. Dangerous, if you ask me.
Don't know about the others - The Terratec looks like it would PROBABLY work for you. It has a zillion kinds of interfaces and works with 5.1. It also looks like it can output both optical and coax so it should work with whatever kind of AV receiver your have.
Only problem is, I don't see Mac compatibility listed, let alone OSX. - Terratec announced that their cards will be supported under OS X this month. I'm betting that they're just waiting on the official release of Jaguar to get them out. I agree about the danger factor involved, so I might wait to see reports on how the drivers are. As long as they are solid I think I'd go with a Terratec card. Seems like they offer some better features.
- The M-Audio card mentions 'home theater' in its promo information, but the fact that it can't output coax or optical Dolby Digital or DTS makes me wonder how you're supposed to use it in a home theater. It makes a great inexpensive i/o for a music studio, though.

What I want is to be able to plug in receiver, headphones, and a mic. Will this do that for me? I notice I can have 2 front USB ports on my G4 with this now (plus), I'd just have to buy the zip bezel and do it. The DMX 6fire 24/96 is a no-go since I don't have an extra 5.25' drive bay for all those lovely features.
This card will do 6 channels (5.1), apparently the Audiophile 2496 won't. It's also around $150 or less (I've got a budget here).
So should I go for this? - This looks like it would work (assuming Mac drivers are coming for this too), but I don't see a headphone output on it (unless one of the three stereo analog outs can utilized as both line-level and headphone-level output). Of course, if you'll have it hooked to an AV receiver via digital, you can always plug your headphones into the receiver's headphone jack.
- That's what I'm unclear of. They also mentioned mic-in but I don't see it as one of the inputs. True, I would just need to plug it into the receiver.
- I emailed Terratec a couple days ago and still haven't gotten a response re:Mac drivers for the cards. I'm hoping they appear because these cards seem like the only 5.1 home theatre solution I can find. I'm sure I could use an Audiophile 2496 with a stereo receiver though right? If anyone knows of a good 5.1 sound card with OS X support that I haven't mentioned let me know.

That card might be better than the 6fire LT, what do you guys think? - I'd feel a little worried about buying a card for my Mac that didn't even have OS9 drivers, let alone OSX support. What if they decide not to actually do Mac drivers? Then you're SOL.
The Audiophile 2496 should work for stereo output, yes. - I wouldn't buy it until I can confirm there are Mac drivers out. I'm positive they will come, just hope it is soon.
